What to Expect on Your Deer Hunt
We hunt over food plots and baited sites — but our hunts are 100% fair chase. No high fences, no controlled deer movement. You’re hunting wild deer on natural terrain.
Deer have an exceptional sense of smell but relatively poor eyesight, so scent control matters far more than perfect camo. Breaking up your silhouette is the goal — not covering every inch.
Hunt Details at a Glance
- Typical hunt hours: Sunrise to late morning, then early afternoon to sunset
- Shot distances: Typically 100–150 yards
- Stand types: Elevated box blinds, double ladder stands, and ground blinds
- Coolest time of day: Just after sunrise — dress in layers
Scent Control Tips
Wash your hunting clothes in scent-free detergent — both the hunting brands and standard options like scent-free Tide or Downy work well. Avoid soaps, shampoos, lotions, aftershave, and cologne with strong fragrances on hunt days.
Some hunters also use attractants and cover scents, available at any sporting goods store. These are optional and come down to personal preference.
Mature Buck Policy
Only one mature buck (greater than 15″ outside spread) may be harvested per hunter per hunt. Bucks under 15″ carry a $1,000 fine — please be confident in your target before taking the shot.
What to Bring
Weapon A rifle is our top recommendation for deer hunting. Shotguns with slugs or buckshot, muzzleloaders, compound bows, long bows, and crossbows are also permitted.
Bring enough of the correct ammunition for your hunt. We recommend sighting in your weapon before you arrive — there’s a range on-site to re-check it when you get here.
Don’t own a deer rifle? We have a few available to rent. Please notify the office ahead of time if you’d like to reserve one, or if you plan to bow hunt.
Hunter Orange — Required 500 sq. inches of hunter orange above the waist is required by law. An inexpensive orange mesh vest from any sporting goods store does the job.
Safety Harness Required for stand hunting. If you don’t already own one, don’t buy one just for the trip — we have harnesses you can borrow.
Suggested for Your Pack
- Binoculars (also keeps you from being tempted to use your scope instead)
- Flashlight for walking to and from the stand
- Gloves and head/ear coverings
- Hat and sunglasses for when the sun’s in your eyes
- Bottle of water
- Thermacell (handy during the warmer part of the season)
- Cell phone (but don’t get so wrapped up in it that you miss the buck walking through your food plot)
